Migration is inherent to a wide range of individuals and family groups. In this process, some things are lost and others are gained. Even so, ties to the homeland can grow stronger, whether through the creation of new communities or through negotiations—not always peaceful—with the inhabitants of the destination territories. Diasporic movements, characterized by dispersion and agglutination, expansion and contraction, inspire transformations and agreements for the maintenance of community life itself.
By bringing their research to the Casa B. Artist Residency, each artist created fragments of their own movements, forming a kind of collective announcement of their journeys. Here, an interest in the production of new memories was also announced, not only regarding the Bispo do Rosario Museum and the Juliano Moreira Colony, but also the histories, traditions, and territories summoned at the intersection of each journey.
The works presented here compose an investigative panorama of ways to position oneself through art in order to generate questions that challenge truths considered unquestionable. The political dimension of an exhibition such as this emerges from the understanding that every formative process—from the individual to the nation—is part of a set of overlapping histories. From those that are actually told to those arbitrarily marginalized.
We must pay attention: to what do a bus stop—which exists only when remembered—weeds encroaching on architecture, the muddy clay along the banks of a distant river, and landscapes created through gaps signify? By taking stock of this inventory, we manage (or at least attempt) to repopulate the world with that which requires a different pace to perceive all that exists in the details.
