Architecture requires you to have an open mind. And not just in the sense of being influenced by other things, but of being influenced by various “selves.” By various ways of doing things, various techniques, various types of techniques. Even in art it happens, when we do painting or work somewhere between.
Architecture connects imagination to execution.
I used to think that college consumed me a lot, but then I realized that it’s the project that consumes me a lot. It demands time; the more time you give it, the more mature it becomes. And attention too, and focus—without focus, it doesn’t work right. It works, but… not right. It’s selfish, but it’s also open; I think both in equal measure, but most of the time it’s selfish. You need to care for it, water it, take it for walks, feed it, love it, give yourself to it—otherwise it won’t give itself to you either, and when that happens, it’s the worst thing.
I like it better because I work directly with creation. Painting doesn’t give me that; music only does when it wants to—it’s different too. Architecture gives me children, but it’s a solo pregnancy, right? I’m the one who gives birth, I’m the one who takes care of them. In reality, she just gets pregnant, then disappears, and shows up when I call her back with a lot of insistence. Drawing isn’t like that… that’s a whole other story.
I said that the project consumes me a lot, right? I think, in reality, I’m the one who does that.
